Best 10 Dining Experiences of 2013!

It's the last day of 2013 and time to say hello to 2014! Cliche as it may sound, 2013 seemed to pass by in a flash, but food wise, it certainly made an indelible mark on me. *Pat my tummy and scream!!!*. Working hard (or more appropriately, eating less) to make the weighing scale my friend again is perpetually an impossible uphill task as I face endless temptations which I happily succumbed into and none of which I'm regrettable for, because though the food may not always live up to expectations, the company which I had usually more than made up for it. Many thanks to my friends, fellow bloggers and foodies for sharing the calories in our gastronomic adventures, the chefs, business owners and PRs for your kind hospitality, as well as the media for the chance to participate in the Singapore Blog Awards and filming for Channel 8's Tuesday Report Program (airing in Jan 2014). Thankful to have you too, my readers, with me on this journey of Experiencelism & Experimentalism! XOXO

Lawry's The Prime Ribs Singapore @ Mandarin Gallery, Orchard

I can't really remember but I supposed it was during one of my previous visits at Lawry's The Prime Ribs that I somehow got on their mailing list and has since been receiving a postcard nearing December each year, reminding me that my birthday is coming and I get to enjoy a 1-for-1 main course during my birthday month. It doesn't take a mathematics genius to figure that this is a good deal, so I thought might as well make use of it lol! Since I already had dinner at Lawry's a couple of times before for their famously known Roasted Beef Prime Ribs, I decided to make my reservation for lunch instead to experience a different feel. As I traveled the familiar route to Orchard Road's Somerset mrt station, before exiting and walking for another 5 minutes to Mandarin Gallery where Lawry's is located, it felt like I'm going back to work on my day off (my office is nearby), except that this is for something much more enjoyable of course :p

Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh 順發肉骨茶 @ Simpang Bedok ~ Chock Full Of Heartwarming Grace

I must slap myself for being a walking contradiction. After all the whining about wanting to lose weight, the lure of a food trail filled with promises of delicious best hawker delights was way too tempting to resist. Ahem... and so I went. After 6 hours of non-stop eating at 5 different places later, I found myself at the final stop ~ Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh 順發肉骨茶 at Simpang Bedok, which is a 10 minutes walk away from Tanah Merah mrt station (exit B). Full as I am, I told myself I will somehow make tummy space for this bak kut teh (pork ribs soup) founded by Jabez Tan, a man whose heart was transformed by God, leading to his repentance and a new lease of life not only for himself, but also for his team which is made up of mainly ex-convicts.

High Society ~ A Gorgeous Café & Restaurant At Pacific Plaza

The task of deciding a place for dinner landed on me once again as we started planning for an evening of fellowship with our dear sisters in Christ before two of the blessed ones leaves for their walk with Jesus in Israel - They will be spending Christmas in Bethlehem! Envy much hehee! I thought High Society at Pacific Plaza would be a suitable venue for all the girls as it's located along Scotts Road and easily accessible by a few minutes walk from Orchard mrt station. Besides, the Baroque-inspired décor of the restaurant is gorgeous! Perfect for camwhoring lol!

{Sentimental Sundays} Birthdays Are A Celebration of Life, And Being Thankful For The Life Given.

Yay! I've celebrated the day I was born for another year! Birthdays are always special because out of the 365 days in a year, it's a day when we can unabashedly be the center of attention and call it ~ My Day! LOL! It's also to remember the day when our mothers went through the pains of labour many many years ago to bring us into this world after months of nurturing us in their bodies. Though some of you might think that it's just another day in life and nothing special, but to me, Birthdays are a celebration of life, and being thankful for the life given.

WINGSTOP! Make A Stop For American-Style Buffalo Wings At Singapore's Bedok Mall!

First Wings World, now Wingstop! American-style buffalo wings have began their invasion into Singapore! Woohoo! It's a good thing, because if you don't already know by now, I will declare unabashedly that I love chicken wings! Lol! With the opening of Wingstop at Bedok Mall, we are now pampered with more choices than ever! Birthed in 1994 and headquartered in Texas, Wingstop boast of 580 outlets across United States and Mexico. Up to 20 outlets are being planned to open in our tiny island alone - Very ambitious I would say! But it also goes to show the level of confidence Wingstop has in their products.

Lau Wang Claypot Delights 老王砂煲小厨 ~ A Place For Homey Food Near NEX Shopping Mall, Serangoon

Once again, I've proven that exercise induced greater hunger in me and is detrimental to my diet plans lol! I did a minor 'leg workout' of walking for a good 15 minutes, as I lost my way inside Serangoon's NEX shopping mall, before finding the correct exit where Nat and Derrick were waiting for me. After walking for another 10 minutes to a nearby coffeeshop, we finally found ourselves at our intended destination - Lau Wang Claypot Delights 老王砂煲小厨. And by then, boy... I was famished and wolfed down dinner!

{Sentimental Sundays} Being A Hawker. I Know How It Feels Like. I Was Once A Young Singapore Hawker.

One plate of roasted chicken wings, and so much memories came flooding back.

It was quite a long travel for me to Tampines, but I don't mind the distance since I was taking leave from work and had the luxury of time. What a worthy trip, as I had one of the best Siew Yoke (Roasted Pork Belly) ever, which came highly recommended by Uncle Smart. Digressing a bit: The siew yoke was indeed fantastic! Our group of foodies ordered another plate after we finished the first, local food guru KF Seetoh even ordered additional portion to takeway. I promise to blog about this awesome siew yoke soon, but first, back to the plate of roasted chicken wings.

Pizzas! Pastas! Best of Italian Classics @ Pietro Ristorante Italiano, Jalan Kelulut (off Yio Chu Kang Road)

The plans to visit Pietro Ristorante Italiano started when my friend asked me, "Do you like Italian food?". My answer was one which does not require a second thought - Yes!... "Then you should try the food at Pietro!"- I was told that the restaurant serves perennial favorites like pastas and pizzas, while staying true to classic Italian recipes such as preparing the carbonara without any cream. A few days later, a fellow choir sister told me she just celebrated her birthday at Pietro and how she enjoyed the food. A double sign for me that I must go, go, go!

Hokkein Classics @ Gim Tim Restaurant 锦珍酒楼, Ang Mo Kio

I belong to the Hokkein dialect group. Can understand Hokkein, can't really speak Hokkein, but certainly know how to eat Hokkein food lol! Last week saw me making my way over to Gim Tim 锦珍酒楼, one of the restaurants in Singapore that has been carrying on the legacy of Hokkein cuisine since the establishment of its humble outlet at the residential block of Ang Mo Kio since 1975. I was there for some traditional Hokkein delights by Chef Lai Yong Meng who has over 20 years of experience.

Hillstreet Fried Kway Teow @ Bedok South Food Centre ~ One Of The Best In Singapore! It's LARDelicious!

A filming engagement brought me back to Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery in the far far far east land of Bedok which is really a great distance to travel for me considering that I stay in the north. Since I already went all the way there, I took the opportunity to try the famous Hillstreet Fried Kway Teow which I always hear friends talking about. It's considered by many to be one of the best char kway teow (CKT) Singapore!

Teppei Japanese Restaurant, Orchid Hotel ~ An Awesome Omakase Experience!

2 hours! 22 dishes! I had my first ever Omakase experience at Teppei Japanese Restaurant! Much has been raved about Teppei which is nestled at Orchid Hotel near Tanjong Pagar mrt station. How marvelous their food is. How great value their omakase dinner is. So much so that its popularity had our reservation in waiting for 4 months before it was finally our turn to plonk our bums on one of the restaurant's 21-counter seats. 4 months! This is the first time I've to be held in anticipation for so long to have a meal lol. Much to my happiness, it was worth the wait :D

Wings World ~ New Specialty Restaurant at East Coast Road Is All About Wings, Wings & More Wings!

Woohoo! It's about time! Time for a specialty restaurant solely dedicated to... CHICKEN WINGS! If I sounded highly excited, it's because I was really thrilled when I first got wind of WINGS WORLD's opening through a friend's sharing on facebook. Don't you just love social media which undoubtedly plays a part in keeping us abreast of the latest yummy happenings? Hehee, anyway, plans were quickly made with a few fellow chicken wing lovers to check out the new place. Right smacked in the foodie haven of Katong along East Coast Road (with the famed 328 Katong Laksa as its next-door neighbour), would this be the best spot to get an American-style hot wing fix in Singapore now? We shall find out.

Goldleaf New Taiwan Porridge Restaurant @ Amoy Street ~ Best of Comforting, Endearing Classic Dishes!

"You came all the way here specially to eat Taiwan porridge? It must be good right?", the taxi uncle asked me as he dropped me off at my destination, Goldleaf New Taiwan Porridge Restaurant at Amoy Street. I couldn't answer him in certainty back then as it was my first visit to the restaurant. Now, as I write in retrospective, my answer would be a resounding "Yes!". My meal at this seemingly humble establishment is more than good! It's awesome!

Quan Lai Kway Chap 泉来粿汁 @ Macpherson Road ~ The Deep-Fried Pig Intestines Is Definitely A Must-Order!

It has been an on-and-off relationship. My affection for Kway Chap began innocently when I was very much younger. Emotions were simple and pure, without a deeper understanding of what kway chap really is. If the food taste good, I will eat it. I remember my mum will always bring us to the Toa Payoh Lorong 7 hawker centre near my school (Pei Chun Public School) on Saturday mornings after my ballet classes for a quick meal of kway chap. The steaming hot bowl of flat broad rice sheets (kway), together with some braised items were delicious and comforting. I adored it! Until I grew a little older and realized that the tasty braised items were..... Pig Offal!

The Song Of India ~ An Indian Fine Dining Restaurant Along Scotts Road

In my imaginative moments, I likened dining in Singapore to an emperor in ancient China where there is an harem of imperial ladies to chose from for his nightly pleasure - There is an abundant of choices. While some seems to be more favored and received repeated visits more often, there are also certain love we will indulge in once in awhile. Indian cuisine is not one which I feast upon on a frequent basis, but is undoubtedly one which I enjoy as well. So when the opportunity presents itself to dine at The Song of India, one of the best-known Indian fine dining restaurant in Singapore, of course there was no hesitation on my part to say "yes". Organized by Asian Masters, an evening of Glenlivet presented with Flavours of Kashmir awaits.

Bedrock Bar & Grill, 313@Somerset ~ One Of The Best Places In Town For A Delicious Meal!

Lunch time, time to eat! We were at Bedrock Bar & Grill to fuel up and enjoy a great offer by The Entertainer, a user-friendly smartphone app which provides us with substantial cash savings when we dine at any of the dining establishments under their list. Redemption of the offer was hassle-free and we benefited from what we thought was a very-worth-it deal at Bedrock: 'Buy 1 main course, get 1 free'! No kidding yo! Best of all, the food at Bedrock was delicious!

Nara Thai Cuisine ~ Best of Thai Street Food Is Now At Singapore's Ion Orchard!

Don't Singaporeans love Thailand and its food? I know some friends who would display no hesitation in buying a flight ticket and hop on a plane to Bangkok for a weekend getaway of indulgence in delicious food and inexpensive shopping which the city abundantly offers. The lure of food, especially Thai street food, is a big irresistible one. But if one is not prepared to sweat it out at the numerous food stalls along the sidewalks, that's where Nara Thai Cuisine comes in and fills the gap, as they bring the best of Thai street food into a restaurant for diners to enjoy in air-conditioned comfort.

Gunther's Modern French Cuisine @ Purvis Street ~ An Awesome Dining Experience!

I must admit, this is a very much overdue post which I had overlooked to write earlier and might have forgotten about if I had not done a run-through of all the drafts sitting on the blog. My excuse: Too much food to eat, not enough time to write (oops please don't judge me :p).  I believe this situation is quite common among some other food bloggers too lol. Anyway, this was a visit to Gunther's Modern French Cuisine, a swanky high-end restaurant helmed by Chef Gunther Hubrechsen at Purvis Street during Singapore Restaurant Week back in March. If I have to summarize the dining experience in one word, that word would be 'Awesome'!

Shin Yeh Bistro (欣葉小台北) ~ Taiwanese Fare @ Square 2, Novena

It's no secret that I love Taiwan and its food. Sadly, my usual visit to Taiwan did not happen this year. Not that I don't have the time, but because I've no travel companion. Going around certain cities alone is not an issue for me as I've done it a couple of time for working trips, but to be by myself during a vacation... it's kinda sad. To have someone sharing the laughter, excitement and delicious food will wonderfully ace the leisure travel experience. Agree? Okay okay, long story short, I miss Taiwanese food! So when we caught sight of Shin Yeh Bistro (欣葉小台北) while walking around aimlessly looking for a dinner place, my eyes lighted up! Haha a meal here it shall be!

Symmetry @ Jalan Kubor ~ A Place Worth Checking Out

Among the list of places we wanna visit, Symmetry is one of them. Not exactly new to the F&B scene, it has began operations since September 2012 at a corner shophouse unit along the tiny lane of Jalan Kubor (opposite Santa Grand Hotel, off Victoria Street), which is a walkable 10-15 minutes away from Bugis mrt station. Reviews of this café by day, restaurant bar by night hangout joint has been good, so we decided to meet there for lunch on a weekday.

"I once was lost, but now I'm found." That could be what the dishes at Makansutra's Nostalgic Classic Cantonese Cuisine Dinner might say if they have a voice. Fukuichi Japanese Dining Restaurant @ Triple One Somerset

Lunch nowadays are usually eaten in front of my laptop as workload gets heavier towards the end of the year because of events planning. But more than everything else, I believe work-life balance is of utmost important. A successful career is not a parameter of one's worth in life. Though busy, I still enjoy clearing my annual leave by taking some afternoons off to go food indulging or at least try to leave the office during lunch hour for a decent meal. Clear the work, clear my head and fill up the tummy - I did all of that when I walked over to Triple One Somerset for a Japanese meal at Fukuichi Japanese Dining Restaurant.

Ala Carte Lunch Buffet at TungLok Seafood, Orchard Central

Any meals with family are always lovely, especially more so if it's a home-cooked one. My mum is a strong advocate of preparing our meals at home whenever she can, because she believes it's healthier, tastier and cheaper. That's the main reason why we seldom eat out and even if we do, there's only a few specific restaurants she will go to. So, I'm quite surprised when she agreed to my brother and sister-in-law's suggestion of going to TungLok Seafood at Orchard Central for their ala-carte lunch buffet. This visit marks our first family lunch there.

松發肉骨茶 Song Fa Bak Kut Teh ~ Teochew-Style Peppery Pork Ribs Soup Along New Bridge Road

When two people are craving for Bak Kut Teh, they made their way to satisfy their cravings, simple as that. Despite its very accessible location along New Bridge Road just opposite Clarke Quay mrt station, that was my very first time visiting 松發肉骨茶 Song Fa Bak Kut Teh, an eatery specializing in the Teochew-style pork ribs soup since 1969. Garlicky, hot and peppery, that's how I love it! Bak kut teh is especially comforting during rainy weather, but when craving strikes, it strikes. Even if it's hot and humid out there, bak kut teh can still be very enjoyable inside air-con comfort.

A Revisit to Jamie's Italian Singapore @ Vivocity ~ The Angus Prime Rib & Pink Snapper Are Must-Trys!

I actually visited Jamie's Italian twice within its opening week lol! The first visit was impromptu with Daniel, this second visit was prior arranged with Derrick, Nat and FC. What made me visit the Naked Chef's restaurant in Singapore's Vivocity again within such a short span of time? Other than not wanting to 'fly kite' the guys, it's food of course, FOOD! What was served up during the first visit was pleasant enough to make me wanna try the other items on their menu. This time round, I had the main courses of Angus Prime Rib and Pink Snapper which turned out to be utterly delicious! Absolutely worth every cent and calories!

Tranquil Sunset Way in west of Singapore has always held a special spot in my heart for that's where I spent some of the happiest months of my life. Sentimental reasons aside, I love the area for its close proximity to Holland Village and Orchard Road, and its abundance of... FOOD! Haha I believe you had pretty much guessed the reason right? Afterall it's not that difficult considering that I have more than enough passion for food to not just enjoy it, but wanting to further spend time and effort sharing my dining experiences through this blog too. Before I deviate too much from this post's topic, let me bring you back again to Sunset Way, home mainly to residential blocks as well as a cluster of restaurants located uniquely at the ground level of the flats. Kim's Family Korean Restaurant @ Lorong Kilat, Bukit Timah

My craving for Alfero Gelato brought us to Kim's Family Korean Restaurant. You must be wondering how gelato and Korean food are related? Haha, they are both located within a few shop units of each other along Lorong Kilat in the Bukit Timah area. Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hun @ Dover Crescent

8pm. Church service ended. Growling tummy. Drizzling rain. Cool weather. Given all these conditions, I did not even hesitate one bit when my friends suggested we walk from Star Vista to further down the road at Dover Crescent for some comforting hot Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hun. Just a short 10 mins walk away, I can still endure the hunger and walk the distance lah. Actually it can be quite romantic to walk in the rain.. except that I'm the "lamp post" lol. Oops, I digressed! Let's quickly get to the fish head bee hun before I faint of hunger :p

Table 24 ~ A Restaurant Serving Contemporary American Food in Chinatown

Singapore's Chinatown is getting a lot more interesting these recent years! With the explosion of boutique hotels, art galleries, offices and new restaurants especially along Keong Saik Road, it is no longer just an area which many visit only once a year to soak in some Chinese New Year atmosphere. There are now more reasons to be here, the best and most frequent reason for me has to be - food. I'm feeling very blessed to have friends (Thanks Joey & Alex!) who are always easy to accept my suggestions for eating places, one of which is Table 24, a newly opened restaurant set in a historical pre-war art deco shophouse along Temple Street, serving contemporary American food.

Madam Kwan's @ Vivocity ~ A Taste of Malaysia's Signature Nasi Lemak in Singapore!

Named after the founder, Madam Kwan's serves up 'Truly Malaysian Cuisine', so goes its tagline. Much hype surrounds Madam Kwan's since news were announced that the popular restaurant chain from Malaysia would open their very first overseas outlet in Singapore. We do not have to travel all the way to Kuala Lumpur to eat their famed nasi lemak anymore, the signature dish has now come to us in Vivocity! I've colleagues in KL who told me that the food standard throughout its KL branches are consistently good, whereas friends in Singapore's first comment would usually be "Very expensive here!". It's because of the latter reason that my BFF refused to come to Madam Kwan's with me. "You crazy arh, pay so much for nasi lemak?" he said. Well, I'm not crazy lah, I just want to try the dish for myself and form my own opinion.

Pidgin Kitchen & Bar ~ An Intriguing Restaurant at Dempsey Road

Pidgin is a simplified language to bridge communication between speakers of different languages, while the appropriately named Pidgin Kitchen & Bar does their bridging of different cultures through the universal language - Food. Inspired by popular dishes and flavors in Southeast Asian cuisine, the creations by Chef-owner Adrian Ling at this newly opened restaurant at Dempsey Road are nothing short of being bold and imaginative. I didn't expect to be in for so many surprises when we chose to dine there on that Friday evening.

Department Of Caffeine (D.O.C) ~ A Hipster Café At Duxton Road

Some places you definitely have to make a visit to, just to see for yourself what the buzz is all about. Department Of Caffeine (D.O.C) at Duxton Road in the Tanjong Pagar area falls neatly into this category. Every other friends are asking me if I've visited the café, some of them like it, some are curious about it. It's such a talk-of-the-town even after a few months of its opening that it made those who have yet to visit seem unhip. I wanna appear hip too, so I went.

Tim Ho Wan 添好運 Singapore ~ The BBQ Pork Buns Are A Must-Try At This Popular Michelin Star Dim Sum Restaurant From Hong Kong!

I know I'm very slow but I've finally tried Tim Ho Wan (添好運)! Much has been said, read, raved about its legendary must-try, the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork (酥皮叉烧包)!! What deters me from checking out this cheapest One-Michelin Star Dim Sum restaurant which hails from Hong Kong earlier is the queue, which is as famous as the bun itself, with waiting time stretching to 2-3 hours when it first opened in April in Singapore.

It seems that the hype has died down quite a bit as we queued for only 30mins during peak lunch hours at the Plaza Singapura outlet on a weekday. With the Toa Payoh outlet officially opening today (8 Sep), another at Bedok Mall set to be ready by end of the year and a West-area outlet in plans, fans will soon be able to enjoy Tim Ho Wan's delectable dim sum in more locations, and hopefully, may there be no more long queues.
