Tranquil Sunset Way in west of Singapore has always held a special spot in my heart for that's where I spent some of the happiest months of my life. Sentimental reasons aside, I love the area for its close proximity to Holland Village and Orchard Road, and its abundance of... FOOD! Haha I believe you had pretty much guessed the reason right? Afterall it's not that difficult considering that I have more than enough passion for food to not just enjoy it, but wanting to further spend time and effort sharing my dining experiences through this blog too. Before I deviate too much from this post's topic, let me bring you back again to Sunset Way, home mainly to residential blocks as well as a cluster of restaurants located uniquely at the ground level of the flats. It now welcomes into the family, the 2nd outlet of Smokey's BBQ American Steakhouse & Grill.
To be honest, I've not been to Smokey's 1st outlet at Joo Chiat Place nor heard much about them before. Only when Jerome told me about their $1 Buffalo Wings, my interest was then piqued. Just $1? Are you serious? Yes! The buffalo wings are available every Wednesday at $1 if you order it by half the dozen. Smokey's call it the "Midweek Madness". With the prices that low, it's madness indeed! Mad happy lah!
But if you can't make it on Wednesdays, fret not because the Buffalo Wings ($10/6pcs) are available throughout the rest of the days at the usual price too. I quite enjoyed the well marinated chicken wings which were deep-fried to an delectable crispiness. The meat was not as juicy as I preferred it to be, but was made more platable when tossed in Smokey's hot wing sauce. The homemade blue cheese dressing served by the side makes an interesting condiment too. I can imagine some of my friends happily washing down the buffalo wings with Smokey's best selection of craft beers, many of which are imported directly from small US craft breweries. While at it, might as well order the Smoked Venison Chili Nachos ($16) too. Fresh tortilla and salsa topped with cheddar, sour cream and homemade chili! Are you tempted already?
I was told that the the ribs are a must-try at Smokey's. Staying true to the Authentic American BBQ tradition, the custom smokers and wood chips are specially imported from America. The meat are smoked and roasted using traditional American method, so what we can expect is a resulting smoked flavor unique to Smokey's. Hmm true or not? The Smoked Baby Back Ribs (Full Slab-$33 / Half Slab-$25) and humongous portion of St Louis Spare Ribs (Full Family size-$48 / Regular-$25) were soon served for us to find out.
Both ribs are seasoned with Smokey's special dry rub and mopped with their homemade BBQ sauce. The slow roast process did indeed gave the meat a fall-off-the-bones tenderness yet still retaining a slight bite which was very pleasant. I find both cuts a tad dry though rather flavorful with a pleasing smokey taste, but prefer the baby back ribs a little more for its meatier texture. Overall, the ribs were decently executed, but somehow short of an exuberant "wow" factor which I'm expecting.
Other than ribs, Smokey's also serves up other American Classics, such as Pulled Pork Sandwich ($15) and Texas Bacon Cheese Burger ($23). Fish lovers can look forward to Southern Fried Smoked Fish ($17), a white fish fillet crusted with corn meal and pan fried to a crispy golden brown. The Smoked US Prime Beef Brisket ($25) which is marinated in ABC Extra Stout, smoked and slow roasted for over 20 hours, is worth a try too.
The vibes at Smokey's is unpretentious, comfortable and inviting, making it a great destination for an informal dinners and winding down after. Food portions are hearty and generous, very perfect for sharing, but don't fight with me for the buffalo wings. Just kidding lol! Do order more and spread the
