Sembawang White Bee Hoon @ You Huak Restaurant ~ Is It Worth Queuing For?

I stay way up north in Singapore and have always complained that there isn't much good food in the area. Upon reflection, I realized that this is absolutely not true. It isn't a lack of good food, it's a lack of exploration on my part. You Huak Restaurant which serves the famous Sembawang White Bee Hoon 白米粉 is one such place which I've yet to check out.

Much has been raved about the delicious Sembawang White Bee Hoon and how customers are willing to bear with the long queues just for a plate of it. So, is it worth queuing for? BFF and I specially made a trip there to find out. Our queue started at 6.45pm on a Friday evening and we waited for an hour before we got a table. One whole hour!

Renowned Ladurée Macarons is now in Singapore!

April 15, 2013 was a very very happy day, because Father sent me an angel with a box of Ladurée Macarons!

Renowned pâtisserie Ladurée finally opens their first Southeast Asia outlet in Singapore, bringing with them their famed macarons specially flown in from Europe! For the uninitiated, Ladurée is one of the best known makers of luxury macarons and pastry in the world. They are the ones who invented the double-decker by sticking two macaron shells together with a delicious ganache filling, a creation which sent countless pastry lovers' hearts fluttering on a sugary high. Now we can have an experience of the dainty French confection too, without flying all the way to Paris! Are you excited much yet?

Dolce Tokyo ~ A Sweet Japanese-Italian Cafe @ 313 Somerset

What's in a name? 'Dolce' means 'sweet' in Italian and the name of Dolce Tokyo seems to be whispering promises of sweet Japanese desserts in my ears. True enough, this latest cafe to set its heart at 313 Somerset, serves that and much more!

Wow! With a wide variety of desserts from Japanese's Zenzai (red bean dessert), Mitsu Mame (jelly cubes), Kaikigori (shaved ice) and Sundaes to Italian-influenced Panna Cotta, Creme Brulee and Chocolate Brownie, dessert lovers are spoilt for choices! As I approached the Japanese-Italian cafe which is situated at the open unit next to Uniqlo, the window display of droolicious looking desserts certainly grabbed my attention.

Alfero Artisan Gelato @ Lorong Kilat ~ Even The Godfather Loves It!

The opening of Alfero Artisan Gelato's newest outlet at Lorong Kilat (after MacPherson Lane and Marina Square) makes another good reason to visit this quiet part of our sunny island! Though quiet, it is anything but less than exciting with the popular Carpenter & Cook, Nook House of Pancakes and Woori-nara situated along the same street. With the addition of Alfero Artisan Gelato, it’s the perfect place to spend my off-work afternoon.

Tonny Restaurant @ Geylang ~ A March Makan Dinner

March 2013 Makansutra dinner brought us to the colorful bustling streets of Geylang! Tonny Restaurant is the place and it's helmed by no other than Chef Tonny himself. With over 30 years of culinary experience under his belt, Chef Tonny, who hails from Hong Kong, is best known for his homely Cantonese style dishes. I waited in hunger and anticipation for dinner to start.

Finally, "上菜了!", I announced happily to my table of hungry foodies as I spotted the waitresses carrying out plates of these Hong Kong Wontons with Spicy Sauce from the kitchen. The dumplings were big, plump and juicy! Totally delectable with its fresh, succulent prawns enveloped within the thin wanton skin. The spicy sauce was not really spicy by my standards, but was just nice in this dish as it did not overpower the natural sweetness of the prawns.

A Noodle Story ~ A Singapore-Style Ramen Stall @ Amoy Street Food Centre

Noodles, noodles, how do I enjoy thee? Let me count the ways... Mee Pok, Mee Kia, Sapporo, Hakata...

Ooh wait! Now there's a new way! The Singapore-style Ramen way!

For a noodle and ramen lover like me, I'm excited much at the establishment of A Noodle Story with their promise of an ultimate noodle dish which one will never forget. The brainchild of a pair of chefs who were trained at Shatec and has worked at a couple of years in some of the best restaurants in the Singapore, they aim to bring quality noodles at an affordable price to the masses. Marrying modern techniques and re-engineering of local hawker favorites, their very own Singaporean-style ramen to suit local tastebuds is born.
