Long Chim Singapore @ MBS ~ Celebrity Chef David Thompson's Thai Street Food Restaurant Celebrates Its 1st Birthday! Selected Dishes & Cocktails At Just $9++

Time flies. Really don't like to start with the cliche "time flies", but how else can we word it any better?

It doesn't seem too long ago when we were excited over the opening of Long Chim Singapore by celebrity Chef David Thompson, and soon, the restaurant will be turning ‘1' at the end of March.

To celebrate a year of serving authentic Thai street food from its location at Marina Bay Sands, Long Chim will be offering a plethora of favorite dishes, new offerings and iconic Thai cocktails for just $9++ on Wednesday 30th March, all day from 12pm to 12am!

With Long Chim meaning ‘to come and taste’, the birthday event is an opportunity for everyone to relish in some Thai street fare at an extremely value price.

Why $9++ then? In Thailand, the number '9' has an auspicious significance of ‘luck’ and ‘moving forward’. So apt for this joyous 1st anniversary occasion!

Long Chim's menu has expanded by much since my last visit, which brought forth a new sense of anticipation when I returned recently for a preview of the $9++ dishes, as well as the new menu additions.

I've stated the regular prices below too so you'd know how much worth you'd be getting.

With 25 items of Starters, Noodles, Curries, Rice Dishes, Salads, Stir-fried, and Desserts to choose from, it wouldn't be too far off to say there will be something suitable for everyone.

Though I must warn that the Chiang Mai Larp of Chicken ($16) is not for everyone. Its straightforward fieriness hit our tongues mercilessly and lingered on, inducing tears in the eyes and directing our hands to reach for glasses of water to douse the fire.

These deceptively simple-looking small parcels of lettuce-wrapped minced chicken seasoned in herbs and spices certainly caught us unprepared. Order if you like challenges.

Thankfully, the rest of the starters were much more "gentle".

The Grilled Pork Skewers ($14) were especially pleasing! Superbly-grilled juicy, tender meat chunks coupled with bits of charred edges that were utterly moreish. Crunchy Prawn Cakes ($16) was nothing like the typical "patty" version, but took form of whole prawns lightly-battered and deep-fried to crispiness.

Equally enjoyable was the Chives Cakes ($15). First steamed than pan-fried, its skin had a lovely textural contrast of being chewy with a thin crisp on the outer. Generous filling plumped up the dumpling cakes, and with the drizzle of dark soy garlic and chili sauce, it somehow reminded us of the traditional Teochew kueh. One of my favorites of the evening.

The Grilled Long Eggplant with Dried Prawns & Steamed Egg ($24) was generally well-received by almost everyone at the table, but its mushy texture failed to win me over. Just my personal preference. Flavor-wise, there was nothing to fault, especially with that lovely subtle smokiness.

Next we moved on to the heavier stuff.

Love the springy noodle bite of Baked Prawns with Glass Noodles ($30), but the prawns lacked the succulence that fresh seafood should possess. Dtom Yam Super ($25) of chicken wings and feet tom yum soup could be more intensely sour and spicy, but perhaps would be fine for milder palates.

Other main dishes such as the aromatic Green Curry of Chicken & Thai Eggplants ($24), and crunchy Siamese Watercress Garlic & Yellow Beans ($16) were well-executed, but nothing appealed as much as the Tilapia in Salt Crust ($34) which was simply an all-rounded excellent dish.

The two desserts that we tried was memorable in each their way.

Pandanus Layer Cake (S12) is similar to our local multi-color kueh lapis sagu, which I remembered peeling and eating it layer by layer during childhood days. This was utterly appealing being soft and chewy with an alluring pandan fragrance, but if you are left with stomach space for only one dessert, make it the Banana Roti ($12)

I could hear the melodious crunch as my dining companion across the table munched down the crisp pastry sandwiched with banana and laced with a visible overdose of sugar and rich condensed milk. The moment I had a piece of the banana roti in my mouth, all diet restrains broke loose. It was worth all the sinful calories. Must must must try.
