Crab Corner 蟹天王 @ FairPrice Hub, Joo Koon ~ Where You Can Have An Ala-Carte Buffet Feast At Only $28.80++

"Who wants to eat SALTED EGG YOLK CRABS?" Me! Me! Me!

It was a common love for this dish that the few of us ventured into the far far land "where-鸟不生蛋-birds-don't-lay-eggs" but hold promises of a crab feast flowing abundantly. With a couple of salted egg yolk dishes included of course hehee <3 <3 <3

I'm talking about Crab Corner 蟹天王, a seafood restaurant situated on level 3 within FairPrice Hub at Joo Koon, the most western terminus of the east-west line. To be fair, its location isn't as remote as we initially thought. The train journey was actually rather fast when traveling from Redhill or Woodlands area.

Besides, the building is very accessible being directly connected to the mrt station. No worries of being caught in unpredictable showers of rain.

The owners felt that there is a lack of seafood restaurants in the west region, and saw its potential.

True enough, Crabs Corner has slowly gained traction since its opening in 2014. It is now popular with the corporate crowd from the surrounding industrial estate who throng the place during lunch time, as well as families during the weekends after grocery shopping.

Other than the spacious main dining hall, private rooms are also available for business luncheons or celebratory gatherings.

Ahh, now we come to the most interesting part..... the food menu!

The selection is extensive! I flipped and flipped through the menu book, those big and thick kind where enticing photos of Signature Delights, Crabs, Seafood, Meat, Poultry, Soup & Broth, Rice & Noodle dishes screamed at you to EAT ME!

First thing first, the Tasty Salted Egg Crab (seasonal price)! Its sauce is of the "gao gao" thick type (which I like), coating each piece of crab generously with a very pronounced salted egg flavor. Coupled that with sweet, succulent Sri Lankan crab meat, it was indeed a gratifying party in the mouth. Lip-smacking good and worth getting my fingers dirty for. It just need perhaps a little more curry leaves and chili padi to elevate the taste even further.

The well-loved national favorite Chilli Crab (seasonal price) leaned toward the sweeter side, and could do with a spicier punch. Though the Thick Bee Hoon Crab Soup (seasonal price + $5) can be better-balanced in terms of flavor (the ginger was a tad overpowering), it was still slurpilicious in a comforting way.

One thing we agreed on: The crabs were all very fresh and meaty.

Depending on how you like it, the crustacean can also be enjoyed in other ways such as Crab Corner's Secret Homemade Black Pepper Crab, White Pepper Crab, Stewed Crab, Butter Crab, Steamed Crab, and Ginger & Spring Onion Crab.

For you who find it a hassle to work through the crab shells just to savor its flesh, go go go for dishes such as the delectable Crispy Crab Meat Rolls (S-$15/M-$22/L-$30).

When I took my first bite of Special Sauce Crispy Beancurd with Crabmeat (S-$20/M-$25/L-$30), I went, "Ooh..... nice! 这是好吃的!" and quickly urged my makan kakis to try it. The homemade beancurd has a very delightful texture, and the creamy pumpkin sauce with slivers of crab meat paired it exceeding well.

With a name like Fried Rice with Salted Egg Crab Meat ($15), the dish has already succeeded in having us salivating in anticipation. Rather than frying all components together, the fried rice and sauce are served separately. The fried rice by itself was pretty ordinary, but pour the salted egg crab sauce over, that's when the magic happened. Not photogenic, but simply yummy!

Borrowing a quote from Crab Corner: "Best is Crabs, but that’s not all", because I couldn't have worded it any better.

Other than the crab-centric dishes, we also tried offerings such as the recommended Steamed Bamboo Clam with Minced Garlic (seasonal price) - fairly okay, Authentic Curry Fish Head ($26) - pleasing with aromatic, coconutty gravy, as well as Pork Ribs with Special Sauce (S-$16/M-$22/L-$28) - fall-off-the-bone tender and coated with a buttery sweet sauce, we all loved it!

I have yet to come to the best part which is..... Some of the above dishes can be enjoyed as part of the Ala-carte Buffet which is priced at only $28.80++ per person! (Available for dine-in only / min 3pax / Mon to Thu dinner from 5pm onwards, Sat, Sun & PH lunch from 11am to 3pm)

Even with the terms and conditions, one doesn't need to be a mathematics genius to calculate that this is a worthy deal.

There are also Lunch Specials where you can enjoy dishes such as the House Special Fried White Bee Hoon with a choice of drink for just $7.80

Our meal ended with Sweetened Yam Paste with Gingko Nut ($4 for single serving or S-$10/M-$15/L-$20). I'm not particularly fond of rendition here.

Nevertheless, it was a tummy full-filling feast which certainly held much delicious moments. The crab and salted egg yolk dishes will draw me back again.

Till the next "journey-to-the-west" adventure! :D
