Why the name Old Boys Gallery? Because the bistro is opened by 3 old boys (as I was told by the sister of one of them who is helping to do the marketing)!
Well, I do not know any of the boys personally so I don't know how "old" they are, but if the colorful, vibrant interior of the casual joint is reflective of their personalities, I would say they're young at heart no matter the age.
Conceptualized to be a place where people can hang out to chill over food and drinks, the former art gallery along Kampong Bahru Road is now transformed into a bistro.
The art element is retained though, those pieces we see hanging on the brick walls are for sale. Just ask for the price if any of it catches your fancy.
Those who need their booze would be happy to know that Old Boys Gallery serves a wide range of craft beers and ciders (close to 40 of them) at fairly affordable prices.
If Truffle Fries ($11) or Onion Rings ($6) are too mainstream for you, go for the Spam Chips ($9) or Sweet Potato Fries ($7.90). I did enjoyed the latter with curry mustard dip, but wished they were less greasy.
Chicken wings are another mainstay on most bistro menus and Old Boys Gallery has their version of OBG Wings ($10.90 for 3pcs / $18 for 6pcs) coated in savory-sweet Marmite sauce.
We find the Baby Squid ($11) which were fried to bites of crispiness and tossed in tangy sauce with curry leaves rather addictive. For something lighter, Vongole Bianco ($13) of venus clams sauteed in white wine broth would be suitable.
The chef's recommendation of Manster Burger ($17.90) is all set to satisfy hearty appetites with its stack of beef patty, cheese, bacon, egg, caramelized onion and pineapple.
We went into food coma after tackling that, but not without trying the Roast Pork Aglio Olio ($14.90) first. This is a dish which combined two of my favorite food, but somehow it felt like they're strangers sleeping separately on the same bed. The flavors could be better infused together.
Sweet tooths and non-alcoholic drinkers are not forgotten as there is a dessert selection of Red Velvet ($7.90), Devil's Double Choc ($9) and Coconut Cake ($7.90), and tea choices such as French Rose ($7), Tie Guan Yin ($7) and Snow Chrysanthemum ($9).
Old Boys Gallery may not be perfect culinary-wise, but it is undoubtedly still a nice place to be at for a chillaxing time over some food and drinks with friends. It seems to be rather popular with the nearby working crowd as well.
