Clinton Street Baking Company, Singapore @ Purvis Street ~ Best NYC Pancake Is Here!

What caught me by surprise was, some of my foodie friends who usually 'chiong' (local slang for 'rush') to cafés on their first day of operations seemed uninterested when Clinton Street Baking Company & Restaurant opened their doors last weekend. Why huh?

For the uninitiated, Clinton St is the renowned bakery from New York City famed for its pancakes, burgers, biscuits and other freshly-baked goods.

Voted "Best Pancakes", and described as "Legendary", "New York #1 Breakfast Spot", "Brunch Magnet", by various New York publications. Are you sold on it yet?

Maybe we are already quite jaded with the flood of mediocre cafés and run-of-mill egg benedicts, but I still harbour a certain degree of anticipation for some hearty American classics such as Buttermilk Biscuit Sandwich ($13.50) and Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($25) from Clinton St.

We were recommended several items from the Breakfast (served all day) and Lunch (served from 11.30am to 6pm) menu, and went along with the suggestions to be on the safe side (tummy space is very precious haha).

Our meal started off delightfully with the famous Wild Blueberries Pancakes ($18) which catapulted Clinton St to cult status in New York. It certainly deserved every accolade it was bestowed upon.

Thick, yet with an amazingly ethereally soft and fluffy texture, its lovely buttery aroma coupled with signature house-made warm maple butter filled our mouths with wondrous deliciousness. Oh my goodness, this is a must order!

The portion was generous enough to share among the 4 of us. If berries are not your thing, the pancakes also comes in Banana Walnut, as well as Chocolate Chunk flavors too. In any case, you wouldn't wanna miss what is possibly the best pancakes in Singapore.

I wish I can say the same for their well-received Chicken & Waffles ($21) too, but the dense and cakey texture of the Belgian vanilla buttermilk waffle doesn't really resonate with our palates. We would also prefer it to have crispier edges.

The slabs of chicken breast meat could do with more moisture, but was sufficiently tender even for this non-breast lover. Its outer was nicely-executed with a layer of thin, crisp batter.

We dropped the Black Angus Cheeseburger ($28) in favor of Salmon Burger ($23) as it's not very often that we see the latter on most menu. The house-made salmon patty itself was pleasing and provided a healthy, clean taste when paired with avocado, tomato and baby arugula. But it lacked that hearty, oomph factor I want in a burger. And..... why no fries with my burger? *sob*

Because..... we have to order the Hand-cut Fries ($7) on the side if we want it. Overlooked that, but we got the Sugar-cured Bacon ($7) which was all of addictive loveliness with its savory-sweet taste.

A selection of cakes, pies and pastries are available too. To satisfy any sweet tooth further, go for their shakes such as Wild Blueberry ($10), Root Beer Float ($10) and Boozy Salted Caramel with Bourbon ($15).

Hits and misses, but Clinton St is still worth the visit. I will return for the pancakes and sugar-cured bacon when craving strikes.
