It's been a few weeks since our last visit to Song Garden at Mercure Singapore Bugis. This time round, we're back at the hotel to check out their Peranakan Dinner Buffet promotion at Royale Restaurant.
As the buffet is only available on Fridays, Saturdays and Public Holidays for dinner only till end of June 2017, we quickly made the trip on a Friday evening, just ideal to wrap up the tiring working week and to celebrate the start of weekend. Yay!
Yay to the affordable prices also. Each adult pays $48++, which is considered very reasonable for the sumptuous buffet line-up that showcase the very best of Nonya cuisine.
Venture up to level 3 of the hotel, that's where Royale Restaurant is located.
Compared to the current minimalist trend, Royale's interior is strikingly different with Baroque-style finishes and furnishing.
While there are booth seats and semi-circular banquet seat for more intimate dining, I chose a regular table for our group because..... it's easier for everyone to get off our seat at any time to get to the food!
Good strategy right? Haha!
We also strategized a bit when it comes to conquering the buffet as each of us set out to get different food from the various stations, and then "share share eat", communal-style style.
It might be ideal to start with a healthy bowl from the Salad Bar, but we prefer the DIY Fruit Rojak where we tossed our choice ingredients such as cucumber, pineapple, taupok and youtiao in sweet-spicy paste. Zesty, crunchy and shiok! Our kind of "Asian salad".
There is also the crowd-pleasing Chilled Seafood including oysters, prawns and clams, as well as a small selection of Japanese Sushi.
While there are also well-loved Asian dishes like Chili Crabs, the highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the Straits-Chinese offerings.
The line-up includes the quintessential Nyonya Chap Chye (mixed vegetables stew), Itek Sio (braised duck in tamarind sauce, coriander powder and spices), Itek Tim (salted vegetables duck soup), Assam Prawns, Beef Rendang, Fish Curry, and Curry Chicken with Potato.
Of course we cannot missed the Babi Pongteh where pork belly is braised in dark soya sauce and taucheo (fermented soya beans), and flavored with cinnamon and sugar.
Dry Mee Siam, and Ginger & Lemongrass Rice serves as worthy carbs to accompany the dishes.
The a-la-minute kitchen is where the attending chef prepares piping hot bowls of Laksa, and Mee Rebus to our order.
This is where you also can find Satay, Popiah, Otah-Otah, and Pandan Chicken.
Everyone was all excited about the durian kueh offerings including Durian Swiss Roll, Durian Mousse Cake, Durian Puffs, as well as Golden Durian Pillow which is a light, fresh crepe pillow filled with durian pulp.
I didn't eat any durian desserts so that my dining companions can have more to eat lol! #kidding
Besides the Peranakan buffet, an all-day-dining menu, featuring both western and local favorites, is available too.
Standouts out include Pan-seared Char Siew Rack of Lamb ($29.90) where premium New Zealand lamb is marinated overnight with a sweet char siew sauce before it is roasted to medium doneness. We liked the lamb for its tender meat, and not too gamey taste.
Oven-baked Alaska Cod Fillet ($29.90), and Hokkein Prawn Noodles ($14.90) also came highly-recommended.
The Peranakan Buffet at Royale Restaurant is available as follows:-

30 June 2017(update: the buffet is extended till 26 August 2017) - Fridays, Saturdays and Public Holidays
