Half Pound Burger Bar & Grill @ Purvis Street ~ Burgers, Pizzas, Pastas & More

Half Pound Burger Bar & Grill
has opened last month at Purvis Street, along the same stretch where some of the popular eating places including Gunther's, Clinton Street Baking Company, Yet Con and Chin Chin Chicken Rice are.

True to its name, the casual dining joint's focus is mainly on burgers using "half pound" Angus patties, as well as grilled meats such as steak, rainbow trout and pork chop.

There is also a selection of pastas, pizza and bar bites to add on to the variety.

I wouldn't describe the menu as particularly innovative nor inspiring, but there are a couple of crowd-pleasers which had us hooked.

The Honey Butter Fries ($10) is one such item. Those crispy shoestring goodness tossed in savory-sweet honey butter, saltish bacon bits, spring onions and chili flakes bits kept my hands busily reaching for more.

While we liked the zesty Asian-style homemade sauce of the Hot Wings (6pc-$10/12pc-$18/18pc-$26), it took away any outer crunchiness that is expected of the deep-fried chicken wings. Perhaps the dish would be more of a winner if the sauce is served separately.

Foie Gras On Rye ($16) came with a tad too much of balsamic reduction, but otherwise, the foie gras itself was cooked to an ideal texture.

Salted Egg Yolk Fries ($10)! Crispy Wild Mushrooms ($10) with salted egg dip! A tinge of regret that we didn't order these starters as well (I'm a fan of salted egg yolk anything haha) but I guess tummy capacity is limited and we're saving it for the burgers.

That is afterall, Half Pound's specialty which promises 220g worth of thick, juicy beef patties for each burger served.

Ironically, it wasn't the signature Half Pound Burger ($18) with 220g Angus beef, candied bacon, truffled gouda, montery jack and pickled daikon that impressed us as the patty was under-seasoned and lacked moisture.

What we preferred was the Grilled Chicken Burger ($17). The huge chunk of chicken thigh was well-marinated and grilled to a succulent bite. Simply enjoyable with sliced cheddar, creamy avocado and cabbage slaw. It was our favorite of the evening.

Half Pound might need to work on the execution of some of their dishes as our Ribeye Steak ($28) came overdone (we requested for medium rare), and the Squid Ink Pasta ($19) was overly peppery to taste. The team seemed to be receptive to feedback so improvements should be on the way.

For beverages, Half Pound serves draft beers from Germany and US, a couple of bottled craft beers and ciders, as well as a selection of wine.

Pricing is considered to be affordable with Lunch Sets at only $17++ with salad or soup, and choice of coffee, tea and soft drinks.
