Yan Ji Wei Wei Seafood Soup 炎记威威食品 @ Woodlands Centre Road Food Centre ~ Could This Be The BEST Seafood Soup In Singapore?

"Woodlands, the northern estate of Singapore that is considered far for most people, but situated at a point which is nearest to Johor Bahru (JB).

"So far yet so near", that's the most often heard comment, followed by the question "any good food there or not?" We will travel everywhere for anything that's delicious! Right? Lol!

Yan Ji Wei Wei Seafood Soup 炎记威威食品 at Woodlands Centre Road Food Centre is said by many to serve one of the best seafood soup around with over 30 years of history!

Though Yan Ji is located within a food centre, what the stall charges for a bowl of seafood soup is not your typical hawker centre prices. It's even more expensive than what one will usually pay at an air-conditioned food court.

A basic bowl of Seafood Soup with Dory Fish starts at $6, going up to $16 for the fancier versions with Crayfish, Pomfret or Red Grouper fish. Extra ingredients of Fish Maw and Scallops can be added at a cost.

The stall also sells Braised Pig's Trotter, and all these can be accompanied with White Rice ($0.50) for a complete meal.

Just by looking at the bowls of Seafood Soup ($6), and Crayfish Seafood Soup ($10), anyone can tell their difference from the usual.

Instead of the typical clear broth, Yan Ji's seafood soup is a shade of light, milky brown. Not the most enticing looking, but be prepared to be blown away by its intense richness. Umami!

The depth of superb crustacean flavors must be the result of simmering the stock for hours. The stall's signboard states that authentic Japanese Hokkaido scallops are used. I guess "tee poh" or dried sole fish contributed to the savory sweetness of the soup too.

But why so little? The soup barely filled half a bowl. Must treasure each precious sip.

It is not an exaggeration to say I love everything inside those bowls.

Prawns were big in size with a bouncy bite, crayfish was meaty and fresh, dory fish chunks were tender. The minced pork was amazingly tasty with bits of mushrooms. I really don't mind paying a slightly higher price for a bowl of good quality seafood soup like this one from Yan Ji. Still affordable.

Believe it or not, it was my first time checking out Yan Ji even though I've been living in the neighborhood for the past few years! I thought to better give the seafood soup a try before I move away someday and regret not visiting the food centre when it's still nearby and convenient, or before the food centre is demolished. So glad I finally did.

Heard of the queues during peak hours but I went on a rainy morning when it was quiet and skipped the waiting time.

Yan Ji have a second outlet at Marsiling Lane which is at two bus stops away.
