$12 Nett Porridge Buffet Dinner @ The ART, Assumption Pathway School (APS)

Singapore may be one of the most expensive cities to live in, but there is still a good number of affordable food options around, including the $12 Nett Porridge Buffet offered by The Assumption Restaurant For Training, or known as The ART.

$12 nett = No service charge. No GST.

Porridge = Lighter and healthier meal.

Buffet = Eat all you want!

I haven't had such a simple yet satisfying meal for a long time.

Prior to our visit, we were not familiar with The ART which was established in April 2011 within the premises of Assumption Pathway School (APS) at Cashew Road.

The school is where students who have failed their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) or dropped out of secondary school can take up vocational courses in hospitality, baking, hairdressing, desktop publishing & design, facility services and culinary skills.

At The ART, students can put their F&B knowledge and skills into practice in a realistic working environment under the guidance of their teachers.

The training restaurant is equipped with a food preparation kitchen, baking facilities, as well as both air-conditioned and alfresco dining options.

Do not be surprised to see students cooking away in the open kitchen, or bringing your food order to you during your visit.

This way, not only will they learn new menus and cooking techniques, they can gain some practical experience in service as well.

The ART is open to public on weekdays and during school term for Lunch and High Tea. Operations are extended on Fridays for Set Dinner from 6pm to 9.30pm.

Expect mostly Western and Asian cuisine (no pork, no lard), but come the last Friday of each month, Porridge Buffet is served!

Why porridge buffet? Because it is popular, and student gets chance to learn to cook Chinese food in bulk. We get to eat porridge with homey dishes. Win win situation haha!

The porridge buffet features a good variety of dishes such as Har Cheong Gai or deep-fried prawn paste chicken, Stir-fried Sesame Chicken, Fried Ikan Selar Fish, Brinjal with Minced Meat, Sambal Long Bean, Braised Mui Choy or preserved mustard greens, Chye Por Neng or omelette with preserved turnip, just to name some selection.

Other condiments includes Preserved Beancurd Cubes, Preserved Olive Vegetables, Chicken Floss, Braised Peanuts, and Salted Egg.

Braised Duck and Steamed Sotong are also served to each table.

All these go so well with Plain Porridge and Sweet Potato Porridge!

Standouts for me were the Braised Mui Choy which were cooked to an ideally soft texture and without being too salty, as well as the homey-style Chye Po Neng. Sesame Chicken was well-received around the table too.

The dishes were well-executed on the whole. We easily went for a few rounds.

To end the meal, there were Red Bean Soup and an assortment of Mini Pastries.

The ART is currently open to the public on weekdays and during school term.
