UNI Gallery by OosterBay @ The Plaza, Beach Road ~ Must-Go Uni Heaven For All Sea Urchin Lovers!

This is for all sea urchin lovers! UNI Gallery by OosterBay is the place to go to!!!

Nestled in the inconspicuous basement of The Plaza along Beach Road, the uni specialty restaurant stood out among the tenants with its bright, eye-catching Japanese-inspired murals, and inviting vibes.

While the establishment may appear to be casual and unassuming, do come prepared to pamper your palate with an extensive range of exquisite uni and premium sashimi which are scoured and air-flown from Japan, USA, and Canada!

My uni-centric dining experience at UNI Gallery left me giddy with uni happiness.

The folks behind UNI Gallery is OosterBay, an online premium seafood grocer.

Since sources to quality produce is already on hand, I thought the brick-and-mortar expansion makes much sense. The dining arm is able to reach out to a different audience group, and we as consumers benefit from the assured freshness and variety offered. Supposedly at relatively competitive prices too.

Win-win.

For instance, a 30g serving size of Japanese Bafun Uni can be enjoyed for $30 here, and Russian Aka Uni at $22. It might cost more at higher-end Japanese restaurants.

Though my favorite way to savor uni is to have it raw aka sashimi-style, I'm certainly not complaining when those curls of lusciousness are coupled with other items too, especially when we're talking about Uni Oyster Shot ($25).

It was already a visual treat with the fairly-large tongue of Canadian aka uni laying seductively with pearls of ikura roe and a Canadian fresh oyster hidden shyly underneath.

There's no dainty way to go about it, but to slurp it down all at once and feel the burst of caressing freshness in the mouth, before letting it glide down the throat. Love it.

Other highlights from the menu includes Uni Shutou or marinated uni in different flavors that is served on Japan Airlines First Class, Uni Tokusen Sashimi ($38) which comes with 7 types of sashimi slices including one uni sashimi, as well as the very delightful Uni Tempura ($36), and the Uni Chawanmushi ($22).

For a more substantial bite, the Uni Ikura Chirashi served with Japanese rice would be ideal. Lunch is a steal at $34.90 as it would cost $68 during dinner!

Though the Canadian aka uni - known for its size, bright orange color, and sweet taste profile with hint of briny sea ocean - is the house uni at UNI Gallery, the type of uni used for the chirashi bowl would depend on its availability. If your bowl's uni seems smaller than what is depicted in other pictures, it could be that Russian aka uni or Bafun uni - which has a cleaner and more defined briny taste - is used.

Uni has gained increased popularity over the years as a quintessential delicacy, and it's high time that a restaurant dedicated to it has finally opened. Whether you're a uni virgin or aficionado, UNI Gallery offers a suitable opportunity to enjoy sea urchin at reasonable pricing that does not break the bank, but do prepare your wallet well if the highly sought-after Japanese Higashizawa Shiro Uni ($180) or Japanese Hadate Shiro Uni ($180) is what you're aiming for.

There is also a menu selection of sushi, temaki, rice and noodles dishes to cater to the wider crowd, but when at UNI Gallery, do give the uni items a try!
