Café NIDO @ Hotel YAN, Jalan Besar ~ Promising But Improvement Needed

Going by appearance alone, Café NIDO is certainly winning with high ceilings, bright spacious interior and industrial chic fittings.

It was all of positive vibes the moment we walked through its doors which is located at the lobby of Hotel YAN, along Tyrwhitt Road in the Jalan Besar area.

But the best way to any man's (or woman's) heart, is still through the stomach I guess.

With so many promising-sounding items on the menu, we ordered more than we intended to.

There are classic choices like Ham & Cheese Croissant ($8.90), Cinnamon French Toast with Maple Syrup ($7.90) and Beef Burger with Caramelized Onion & Melted Gruyere ($18.90), as well as offerings injected with touches of local flavors such as Beef Rendang Shepherd's Pie ($14.90) and Chili Crab Tartlet ($4.50).

The Toasted Charcoal Brioche with Kaya & Sous Vide Egg ($16.90) was not too bad actually, reminiscent of our popular local breakfast set with a bonus of fried noodles, but the noodles can be less salty in taste for a more enjoyable bite.

I don't really fancy the Raspberry Pancake with Honey Pistachio ($9.90) which was densely packed with a cake-like texture. The Homemade Laksa with Charred Crayfish ($12.90) can do with a more robust broth, while the prawn can be fresher with a bouncy bite for the Salted Egg Yolk Aglio Olio ($16.90) pasta dish.

Something was somewhat lacking, which is quite a pity.

Perhaps the best dish among all that we tried was the Tom Yum Wings ($10.90). Adequately crispy with tender meat and mildly-spicy, zesty flavors.

We enjoyed the light softness of the Strawberry Swiss Roll ($4 for 2pcs) as well.

Among the cafés that we visited recently, Café NIDO can be considered as one of those with better potential, but it has yet to win a place in my heart as the stomach was less than satisfied with the overall food experience.

Let's hope it will improve with time.
