Ellenborough Market Café @ Swissotel Merchant Court Hotel ~ The Place To Go For Peranakan Buffet

The matriarch of Peranakan buffet has returned!

Ellenborough Market Café
at Swissotel Merchant Court Hotel has always been popularly known for their buffet of Peranakan or Straits Chinese offerings, and a killer-breathe rendition of Durian Penget. After a recent refurbishment, the all-day dining restaurant is now back with these well-loved favorites and an expanded repertoire of international spread as well as live action stations.

Here are 5 reasons why I think it's worth a trip over.

Revamped Interior

What a whole new dining experience at Ellenborough Market Café!

The vibrant turquoise-colored main dining hall accented with diamond-cut glass wall features, the lilac mezzanine completed with stained-glass skylight, the Hampton-esque dining room where the show kitchen buffet lines are, these three zones made up the heritage-meets-contemporary style of the restaurant's revamped premises.

Live & DIY Stations

We do see the addition of live and do-it-yourself stations injecting some interactive fun to the line-up.

The La Mian station was quite a sight, with the noodle master theatrically hand-pulling the dough and flinging the strands of noodles up high (and occasionally smiling at the cameras lol). Complementing the noodle soup are braised meat balls which are not to be missed. Perfectly juicy, flavorful and crunchy with bits of chestnuts in each bit.

Kueh Dadar are prepared by the chef ala-minute, and we got our hands busy making some Kueh Pie Tee too.

International Spread

Though the main highlight at Ellenborough is the Peranakan cuisine, there is still something for almost everyone.

Chilled Seafood such as Scallops, Prawns, and Mussels for crustacean lovers. Japanese staples of Sashimi and Sushi. A Salad Bar for some healthy greens. Assortment of Cheese-y goodness.

Not forgetting the carving station featuring daily specials such as Roast Beef and Leg of Lamb for the carnivores.

Peranakan Delights & Asian Favorites

Ellenborough is one of the few places in Singapore to offer such a comprehensive buffet selection of Peranakan dishes including Ayam Buah Keluak (spicy chicken with black nuts), Babi Pongteh (stewed pork with fermented soya bean), Achar (spicy pickled vegetables), Gado Gado (vegetables in peanut sauce).

There are also Sambal King Prawn, Herbal Spare Ribs, Black Pepper Slipper Lobsters and Chili Crabs to be enjoyed. Eat all you can!

Kueh Galore

There are the typical cakes and mini dessert cups, but what really reign at this buffet line are all the kueh kueh (bite-sized snacks). From Kueh Kosui (steamed palm sugar cake), Kueh Dadar (coconut pancake roll), Bubur Cha Cha (sweet potatoes in coconut milk), Ah Balling (glutinous rice balls), to Muah Chee (sticky rice dough coated with peanut and sugar), it all can be enjoyed here. Of course not forgetting the highly-acclaimed Durian Pengat (durian puree with coconut).
