The Sushi Bar ~ Popular Japanese Eatery At Far East Plaza Opens New Branch At Ngee Ann City!

There was once when I almost made it to The Sushi Bar at Far East Plaza, but did a u-turn upon sighting the queue at its entrance. Heart wanted to go in and understand the reason for the popularity of this humble Japanese eatery located in Orchard Road, but growling tummy said cannot wait. Heart lost, tummy won.

Fast forward to a few days ago: The Sushi Bar opens a new branch at Ngee Ann City, and there was no queue (yet)! Yay! Both heart and tummy are happy now! :D

The restaurant's interior is very spacious, and considered to be a tad more upmarket compared to the Far East Plaza outlet. Tables are placed comfortably apart which is rather unexpected for a casual dining establishment too.

It took us a while to figure out what's on the temporary menu though, with font too small and printing that's barely discernible. Variety is wide too with items categorized into Appetizer, Hot Dish & Soup, Donburi, Noodle, Sashimi, Sushi, Makimono and Temaki. Haha gluttonous me find it difficult to restrict myself to just a few dishes, So I did the next best thing: Asked our server for recommendations.

She shared that there are a couple of items which is new to this outlet: Tempura Moriwase ($24.90), Aburi Kaisen Chirashi Don ($26.90), Wagyu Don ($34.90) and Dragon Roll ($25.90) featuring tiger prawns topped with unagi and avocado. Hmm... new but not exactly new isn't it?

We went ahead to order those anyway, but dropped the dragon roll in favor of their signature Salmon Aburi Roll ($14.90). I can see why the latter is one of the favorites at The Sushi Bar.

A slight torching to the salmon gave an enticing charred appearance to the surface of the roll which held a combination of salmon, crabstick, avocado, mayonnaise, and sushi rice. The interplay of raw and lightly-torched salmon, with wonderfully balanced soft, creamy texture was gorgeous!

Highly satisfying in all senses. Pop one into your mouth, feel the burst of flavors, and you'll understand what I mean.

The Tempura Moriwase ($24.90) of prawns, mushrooms and assorted vegetables was executed to non-greasy crispiness. Deep-fried stuff are always appealing. I like!

What I like too is the beef rice bowl, which is quite a staple offering in a number of Japanese eateries nowadays. The rendition of Wagyu Don ($34.90) here features premium slices of beef that is nicely seared to the perfect tender doneness and drizzled with sauce. Ooh just look at that pinkish centre! Mix the runny egg together with the rice, savor it with a bit of fried garlic, there you have it, a comforting bowl of deliciousness!

The Aburi Kaisen Chirashi Don ($26.90) showcased a vibrant gathering of fresh salmon, tuna, swordfish, yellowtail, scallop and salmon belly with lovely partly grilled, partly raw texture, and topped with salmon roe. We enjoyed some pieces more than the others, but overall it's a tasty treat for fans of chirashi don. I must add that the quality of sushi rice here is good too!

This indie Japanese eatery can certainly hold its own against competition from the big Japanese restaurant chains out there. Given the standard of food we've tried so far at The Sushi Bar, I wouldn't hesitate to make a return visit and try out more dishes from their menu.

  1. Your post is sooooo similar to Daniel Food Diary's: http://danielfooddiary.com/2015/06/05/thesushibar/

"Its temporary menu though, is a true test to your eyesight, with font so small and printing so blur."" "hold its own" "indie" etc. The dishes mentioned are the same, even the 6 types of sashimi in the chirashi don are mentioned in the exact same order "salmon, tuna, swordfish, yellowtail, scallop and salmon belly".
