On-Yasai Shabu Shabu @ Chijmes ~ Super Satisfying Japanese Hot Pot Buffet!

温野菜 "On-Yasai" literally means "warm vegetables" in Japanese, but the name of this Japanese shabu shabu restaurant signifies a deeper meaning of wanting to create a 温 On (warm food and heart-warming service), 野 Ya (healthy and fresh) , 菜 Sai (wide variety of appetizer/vegetables) experience for their customers.

With over 300 outlets, On-Yasai is considered to be the largest shabu shabu chain in Japan. Chijmes and OneKM Mall are their first two Singapore outposts.

We were at the Chijmes branch for a hot pot dinner on a rainy evening, and it was a super satisfying, yummilicious meal indeed.

Though I must admit that we were initially disappointed that the "Enjoy our hot pot buffet and Kagoshima Wagyu as much as possible with ordering Premium Buffet course" promotion that was shared on their Facebook page turned out to be not what we had expected.

In short, no unlimited servings of the Kagoshima Wagyu. We guessed the intended information was lost in Jap-English translation.

Still, their usual buffet offerings are certainly value-for-money.

Options include:
Standard Buffet ($33.90++) with 3 kinds of meat (Pork Collar, Pork Belly & Chicken Thigh)
On-Yasai Buffet ($39.90++) with 5 kinds of meat (addition of Karubi Plate & Beef Chuck Eye Roll)
Premium Buffet ($49.90++) with 7 kinds of meat (addition of Wagyu Chuck & Kurobuta Collar)

All buffet sets includes the same accompanying host of Seafood, Sushi, Tempura, Side Dishes, Vegetables, Rice and Noodles.

We get to choose 2 Soup Bases from a selection namely Hokkaido Miso, Japanese Dashi, Golden Truffle, Soya Milk and a Secret Sukiyaki concoction.

And finally, Dessert which is one scoop of Ice Cream (vanilla, chocolate, matcha, seasonal special) each.

While waiting for our soup bases and hot pot ingredients to be prepared, we started with a couple of sushi rolls, as well as mixed tempura platter to keep our hunger at bay. Decent, but my advice is to save your stomach space for the real deal.

Seafood such as prawn, mussel, clam, seabass and squid were adequately fresh. Vegetables came in a good variety (including carrot, cabbage, Japanese leek, tong oh, sio pai chye, lettuce iceberg, shimeiji and oyster mushroom) and added an extra sweetness to the broth.

But the highlight was undoubtedly the meats! We especially enjoyed the beef, thinly-sliced and just needed a brief dip into the simmering hot pot for a tender bite.

Even though there is a stated duration limit of 120 minutes for the buffet and we lost track of time while indulging in the delicious hot pot, thankfully the staff did not chase us out.

Must also give credit to the staff for their efficient and friendly service, which has made the enjoyable dining experience complete.

Lastly, thanks to BFF and The Hungry Cow for the birthday treat! :D
