Una Una @ Bugis+ Serves Unagi Hitsumabushi At Only $9.80! Possibly The Most Affordable In Singapore

Unagi hitsumabushi at only $9.80 onwards?!! We're definitely rushing over to Una Una to check it out.

Officially opened a few days ago on 5th September at Bugis+, the unagi specialty restaurant offers the Nagoya-style dish where freshwater eel is charcoal-grilled and served over a bed of rice with assorted condiments at a much lower pricing compared to its competitors.

It's possibly the most affordable in Singapore.

To be honest, we went with minimum expectations because, as the Chinese saying goes "一分钱,一分货" i.e. you get what you pay for.

So we were pleasantly surprised when our Unagi Hitsumabushi ($9.80 small / $14.80 regular / $19.80 double) has that lovely charcoal-grilled aroma when it arrived at our table. The unagi is basted with special in-house sauce made of shoyu, mirin, and sugar and grilled over twice for about ten minutes to create a winning texture that's crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside.

Served over a bed of warm Hokkaido rice, it's really not too bad at all!

It is recommended to eat the hitsumabushi in 3 different ways to experience different flavour profiles.

Divide the bowl into four portions, and enjoy the first portion on its own to appreciate the depth of flavour of the eel. Next, add some wasabi and green onions. For the third portion, we added clear dashi to the mix and had it ochazuke-style. Lastly, enjoy the final portion the way you like most!

If you love your sashimi and want the best of both worlds, go for the Kaisen Hitsumabushi ($18.80) where the unagi bowl comes with cubes of fresh salmon and tuna too.

Una Una also serves Tokyo-style Unaju ($19.80 regular / $29.80 double) which comes in a bento box.

The eel is prepared differently by grilling it over charcoal twice for only six to eight minutes for a softer and more tender texture. The unaju also comes with more rice, and is served with chawanmushi.

Those with bigger appetites can opt for the Salmon Ikura Ju ($26.80) or Unagi Beef Shabu Ju ($22.80) that comes with slices of US beef.

Besides the hitsumabushi offerings, the menu also features a variety of items like Hokkaido Grilled Squid ($14.80), Philadelphia Roll ($12.80), Unagi Roll ($15.80) with avocado, crab stick, and unagi slices, and Salmon Yonshu Mori ($28.80) where we get to indulge in salmon belly, aburi salmon, sake and salmon roes all on one platter.

Unagi is traditionally consumed in Japan during summer, and the freshwater eel is said to contain nutrients that boost stamina during the hot months. Given that Singapore's weather is unrelentingly passionate all year round, all the more I need that boast of stamina to fight the struggles of daily life.

With such value pricing offered by Una Una, unagi hitsumabushi is now an affordable treat anyone can have on a regular basis.
