Kindori ~ Japanese Craft Chicken & Beers @ CHIJMES

"If they (Korean) can do it, we (Japanese) can do it just as well, if not better!"

That was literally the case after an evening over chimaek (the pairing of Korean fried chicken and beer). Long story short: The friendly challenge was accepted, inspiration came striking down and... tadah! Kindori has now landed at Chijmes!

Located on the first level just outside Rengaya, Kindori specializes in Japanese fried chicken and... you guessed it... Japanese craft beers.

I was telling my friend I was more drawn to the fried chicken rather than the beer offerings of Kindori but had to quickly swallow my words as my mouth welcomed the first gulp of Morita Red Miso Lager ($15).

Smooth, sweet, not too gasey, and served wonderfully chilled, this award-winning dark lager brewed with a hint of miso paste to impart a slightly sweet, unique flavor has everything that I like in a beverage. I thirsted for more.

Of course there are many other choices such as popular favorites Kagua Blanc Yuzu ($18) and Koshihikari Lager ($13). You just have to find the ones that suits your liking from the well-curated beer list.

Though the crunchy Chicken Soft Bone ($6) went really well with the beer, it got boring after awhile.

We very much preferred the fried chicken pieces. Prepared using fresh kampong chicken which is said to have a richer, deeper favor that shines through when deep-fried, its meat was indeed flavorful, and has a tender, springy bite.

The chicken is thinly-battered, well-fried to a golden crisp, and not greasy as one would expect deep-fried food to be.

Depending on your appetite, the fried chicken can be ordered as Half Bird (4pcs, $16), Full Bird (8pcs, $29), Chicken Wings (4pcs, $9). There's the Boneless Chicken Karaage (6pcs, $8) option if you prefer not to get your hands messy.

Each fried chicken order comes with a choice of three complimentary housemade sauces such as Kare Curry, Wasabi Cream, and Umami Ume, and I recommend to get the Magic Ikura Cream ($8) which comes with a generous heap of fish roe as well.

While I'm still in love with my Korean Fried Chicken, I'm making a bit of space for this Kindori Japanese fried chicken too. My heart is big enough. How about yours?
