Ho Fook Hei Soy Sauce Chicken @ Great World City ~ Well-Executed, Comforting Cantonese Dishes By Joyden

Ho Fook Hei can be quite a mouthful for those who don't speak the Cantonese dialect. It took me quite some time to get it right oops.

Meaning 好福气 or good forturne, the auspiciously-named casual dining eatery located on the first floor of Great World City (near the office towers) serves its signature rose wine soy sauce chicken, and a medley of authentic Cantonese specialties prepared with time-honoured recipes passed down from generations.

Seems that this latest concept by locally-owned Joyden group of restaurants is very well-received by diners as Ho Fook Hei was packed when we visited on a weekday evening for dinner.

Since the Specialty Rose Wine Soy Sauce Chicken ($19 half / $35 whole for dine-in & takeaway) is the most highly-recommended item on the menu, we definitely must order a plate to try.

Using carefully-picked chicken of an optimal weight and age, the poultry is first brined overnight then poached in a braising liquid concoted with home-aged soy sauce and a blend of over a dozen Chinese herbs and spices including cinnamon and star anise. Top quality rose wine is finally added to impart a distinct floral fragrance.

I was most impressed by the texture of the chicken. It was superbly tender, moist, and deep in flavours when I bite into each piece. No problem even if I have to finish the whole half portion by myself because even the typically dry breast part is soft and palatable.

We also had a plate of Hong Kong-style Egg Noodles ($3.80) each to go with the chicken, but if you're dining alone or just want a fuss-free quickie, it would be a good option to go for the Specialty Rose Wine Soy Sauce Chicken Noodles ($8.80) where you can enjoy both the chicken and noodles plus some blanched greens on one plate.

The savory-sweet luscious Honey-Glazed Black Barbeque Pork Belly ($13) is another dish that we enjoyed tremendously. Love the freshly-made Pork & Prawn Roll 'Hae Zor' ($7.80) too! It was so moreish that we polished off two portions lol!

Other menu highlights include Shrimp Dumpling ($8.80) stuffed with minced pork, prawns, black fungus and chives, as well as a range of Cantonese congee prepared using premium rice and superior broth. If you like the thick and smooth consistency of Cantonese congee, the version at Ho Fook Hei will suit you well.

While I love our bowl of Red Grouper Fish Fillet Congee ($9.80) which is served with a generous portion of thickly-sliced red grouper, perhaps on hindsight we should order other variations like Lean Pork & Century Egg Congee ($8.80), Silky Chicken Congee ($7.80), or Mixed Seafood Congee ($9.80) because..... we had another two fish dishes following this lol.

Both the appetizing Seabass Fillet Steamed with Signature Nonya Assam Sauce ($14.80), and succulent Cod Fillet Steamed with Old Ginger Sauce ($24.80) were equally good, and paired greatly with steamed white rice.

Depending whether you prefer your dessert hot or cold, Sago & Pomelo in Fresh Mango Puree ($4.50) and Warm Red Bean Soup Wiith Aged Mandarin Peel & Lotus Seed ($4.50) are two choices that you can go for.

Not every meal has to be luxurious or life-changing. I will return to Ho Fook Hei for their well-executed comforting dishes any time.
