Beef Sukiyaki Don Keisuke, The Latest Concept By Celebrity Chef Keisuke Takeda Opens At Onze @ Tanjong Pagar

It is finally revealed what Japanese Ramen King, Chef Keisuke Takeda, has up his sleeves recently: Beef Sukiyaki Don Keisuke!!!

With the opening of this latest concept at Onze @ Tanjong Pagar, one can say that Chef Keisuke is set to capture our hearts and tummies again with his rendition of what is considered to be a daily comfort food in Japan.

You can imagine it to be the ideal marriage of sukiyaki and gyu (beef) don into one unique blend of favor. I went, I ate, I craved for more bowls!

Be prepared to queue for a while though (especially during peak hours) as the restaurant does not accept reservations, and space is very limited with only 14 counter seats.

The party starts once guests are seated, as we first get to eye-feast on the happenings in the open kitchen, and partake in the boisterous atmosphere of this charming eatery.

While deciding what to order, I was salivating at my dining neighbour's drool-worthy food, and trying very hard not to make it too obvious lol!!!

Ordering is very straightforward as the menu is concise with only two variations of the Beef Sukiyaki Don:-
  • Beef Sukiyaki Don ($13.90) with US Prime Beef
  • Kiwami Wagyu Sukiyaki Don ($29.90) with Yonezawa Beef A4

All bowls are served with steamed Koshihikari rice that is carefully prepared in traditional Donabe (Japanese claypot) rice cooker to give the rice a sweet flavor and soft texture.

It also comes with side servings of sesame tofu in dashi ankake sauce, onsen egg, miso soup, assorted pickles (pumpkin, beetrrot and burdock), and Chinese cabbage, Japanese cucumbers, carrots and kelp.

A dedicated chef will prepare the beef sukiyaki bowl for each diner right before their eyes, a sight which we don't usually get to experience when savoring a sukiyaki dish.

I went straight for the Kiwami Wagyu Sukiyaki Don ($29.90). Yonezawa Beef A4 is known to be one of the top three Japanese Wagyu in the culinary world, and to be able to enjoy a generous portion of it with the sukiyaki don at such a reasonable price is too good a deal to miss.

The beef is quickly simmered in sukiyaki sauce with shimeiji mushrooms for around 20 seconds so that its doneness is still at medium-rare, exactly the way I prefer.

It was a beautiful moment in the mouth as the tenderness and subtle favor of the wagyu beef came together with the sweet sukiyaki sauce and warm fluffy Koshihikari rice ooh so perfectly.

What sorcery is this? Luxurious yet simple and comforting at the same time. It's the kind of food which I can imagine having at the dinner table everyday. Bliss.

I wondered how the Beef Sukiyaki Don ($13.90) would fare, but instead of over-stuffing myself with another rice bowl, it made more sense to order the US Prime Beef ($10 per serving) as an additional order.

The US Prime beef is also cooked to an ideal tenderness and has a little more bite compared to the Yonezawa wagyu. Not the same, but just as enjoyable. I like it too.

No doubt that I will return for these bowls of deliciousness again.
