The mapo tofu dish at Michelin-starred Shisen Hanten by Chen Kentaro at Mandarin Orchard Singapore is so immensely well-received that it spanned off a sister concept, Chen's Mapo Tofu.
Located at Downtown Gallery, the brand became accessible to the wider audience in a casual and fuss-free dining environment.
Guess what, Chen's Mapo Tofu has now opened its latest outlet at Jewel Changi Airport! You can find it inside Five Spice, a foodcourt offering various Asian cuisine, and modelled after the local hawker scenes.
Though Chen's Mapo Tofu's setup at Jewel might be humble, it still offers a dedicated area comprising of 44 seats fronting the stall for diners to enjoy their food.
Menu-wise, expect to find the same popular favourites as the Downtown Gallery outlet including Dan Dan Mien, Soup/Dry ($10.50) - noodles in spicy sauce, Nasu Don ($11.50) - eggplant and minced meat in pickled chilli sauce on rice, Buta Don ($14) - Szechwan spiced pork on rice with onsen egg, Kaisen Katayaki ($14.50) - crispy noodle with seafood, and of course Mapo Don ($10.50) - Chen's signature mapo tofu on rice.
My initial plan was to order the signature Chen's Mapo Don only but seeing that the Signature Combo ($12.50) offers the best of both worlds with 1/2 mapo don + 1/2 dan dan mien, I quickly changed my mind hehee.
The mapo tofu was still as delicious as I remember it to be. Cubes of silky beancurd smothered in a savory minced meat sauce that's adequately spicy and numbing yet comfortable enough for the tongue. The dish was a tad on the greasy side so it is absolutely a must to eat it with the Japanese short-grain rice.
I choose the dry version for the dan dan mien, and the bowl of noodles turned out to be too dry for my liking. Perhaps it need more topping of the meat sauce, or the soup version would fare better.
In addition to the main rice and noodle items, there's also an array of side dishes like Szechwan Popcorn Chicken ($5), Szechwan Century Egg & Tofu ($4), Banbanji Chicken ($4), as well as add-on options of Braised/Onsen Egg ($1.50) which you can order to complement your meal..
If you're pressed for time, you can also choose to takeaway the meal and eat it later at your convenience. Hmm... suddenly I'm wondering if the mapo don can board the plane with me for my next trip. It will beat any economy in-flight meal for sure lol!
