JUMBO Seafood @ ION Orchard ~ The NEW & Outlet-Exclusive Chilli Crab Dim Sums Are A Must-Try!

Most of us should be familiar with JUMBO Seafood, a Singapore home-grown brand that's best-known for its award-winning... Chilli Crabs!

If I sound excited, it's because I really am. JUMBO's latest outlet had opened last December in the convenience of town in ION Orchard, so it's now more accessible than ever to get that chilli crab craving satisfied.

We can also expect new and outlet-exclusive dishes dishes from dim sum and pao fan, to seafood signatures. For the first time ever, JUMBO Seafood's chilli crab is presented in bite-sized dim sum offerings. I totally recommend the trio of chilli crab dim sum that got our whole table enamoured.

My favourite is the Pan-fried JUMBO Chilli Crab Buns ($8.80/3pcs). It's not unlike 'sheng jian bao' but instead of the usual meat filling, the bun is stuffed with delicate crab meat in a sweet and spicy chilli grab gravy.

The pairing brought on an endearing familiarity yet excites at the same time. This is a must-order!

Baked JUMBO Chilli Crabs Puffs ($8.80/3pcs) was all of the same chilli crab filling goodness encased in buttery and flaky pastry, while Chilli Crab Meat Sauce with Fried Mantou ($16.80) came with a generous portion of sauce to dunk the fried buns in.

During moments when you want to enjoy the addictive flavours of chilli crab but dread getting your hands messy, these chilli crab dim sums would be the next best option. Do note that it's available only during lunch and weekend high tea though.

Besides the chilli crabs offerings, we cannot leave JUMBO without having some of high quality live seafood which it's also well-known for.

Our order of JUMBO's signature Geoduck Clam ($18.80 per 100g) left quite an impression.

The beauty of the clam's super freshness is best displayed when we had it sashimi style, but it's just as lovely when lightly cooked in bubbling hot superior broth.

Simple preparation methods appealed more to me when it comes to seafood, so while the Cheese-baked Mentaiko King Prawn ($16) was good, it did not wowed me like the geoduck clam did.

The Crispy Fried Cod Fish with Nonya Sauce ($22) was superb!

Our table were in agreement of the fish's moist and tender texture, broken in a good way by a thin layer of crisp batter. Paired with the tangy and highly-appetizing gravy, the cod fish was moreish in every bite.

I would have asked for a bowl of white rice to go with it if not for couple of outlet-exclusive dishes that's coming up next.

For instance, you will definitely want to save tummy space for the aromatic Cod Fish Otah in Coconut ($16.80), and King Prawns & Fragrant Rice in Rich Seafood Broth ($38).

The latter is essentially a dish of rice served in soup, but oh boy, not all renditions are of equal standing. JUMBO prepared their broth by simmering prawn shells for several hours, resulting in an umami-rich flavour. The jasmine rice soaked up the tasty crustacean broth excellently, and crispy rice grains were also added for some textural contrast.

There is also the Live Boston Lobster & Fragrant Rice in Rich Seafood Broth ($78) if you prefer lobster to prawns.

My tummy was feeling fairly full by the time Stir-fried Chinese Chives with Minced Garlic ($11 XS | $14 S | $21 M | $28 L) and Home-made Beancurd & Mixed Seafood Braised with Abalone Sauce ($14 XS | $18 S | $27 M | $36 L) were served but I still went ahead to polish it off anyway because delicious food shouldn't be wasted so it all went to my waist lol!

It's interesting to note that some dishes can be ordered in XS portion. Extra small serving size is good for days when we feel big in size, or when the dining group is small but wish to order more dishes for variety.

Durian lovers can go for Fried Durian ($6.80) and Chilled Durian Pudding ($6.80) for desserts. If you're adverse to the acquired flavor of the tropical fruit like me, Chilled Mango Sago Pomelo ($5) and Double-boiled Peach Resin ($4.50) would be much better choices.

With the opening of JUMBO Seafood at ION Orchard, it marks a milestone in the restaurant's brand history as it is their first outlet along Singapore's premium shopping belt.

The 160-seater space is suitable for both smaller groups or larger get-togethers. Private rooms are also available, but I much prefer the main dining hall for its panoramic views of Orchard Road.

JUMBO's sumptuous offerings can be enjoyed at its 6 outlets (East Coast Seafood Centre, Riverside Point, The Riverwalk, Dempsey Hill, ION Orchard, NSRCC's Changi Clubhouse) all across Singapore, as well as its 11 overseas branches (China, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam).
