CNY 2018 @ Park Hotel Clark Quay ~ Rousing Start To The Year Of The Dog

While Park Hotel Clarke Quay does not have a dedicated Chinese restaurant, indulging in Chinese New Year reunion feasts are still possible here as the hotel is opening up their function rooms for table reservations from 8th February to 2nd March 2018.

Tip: Request for the room next to the pool if it's available. The view is lovely.

The food is delightful as well, specially crafted by Chef James Wong, a culinary veteran with nearly four decades of experience in Oriental and Cantonese cuisine.

A line-up of 4 menus are available, auspiciously named Prosperity, Fortune, Harmony and Success, to suit various dining group sizes from 4 to 10 persons.

We started off with the lo hei or prosperity toss yu sheng, the mandatory celebratory centrepiece at any CNY feast. Between the Prosperity Tuna Yu Sheng and Ultimate Success Premium Abalone Yu Sheng ($88++ per platter, or add $38nett to upgrade to this premium toss with any set menu ordered), we went for the latter which features gold-dusted mini whole abalone!

The combination with lofty layers of purple cabbage, radish, shimeji and enoki mushrooms, lycium leaves, yellow chives, carrots and kaffir leaves with chef's tangy home-made sauce was colorful with enjoyable crunchiness in each bite.

This was quickly followed by the Superior Braised Shark's Fin Soup with Crab Meat & Homemade Stuffed Crab Claw, and Steamed Whole Red Garoupa in Superior Light Soy Sauce.

The fish was already deboned, making it convenient to enjoy. Meat was tender, and the crunchy asparagus stalks provided a nice textural contrast. It was one of my favorites of the evening.

Crispy Chicken with Fresh Button Mushrooms in Cream Sauce was another crowd-pleaser. It reminded us of the French-style creamy poulet rôti haha!

Though the dish presentation didn't looked the best, and pairing of roast chicken and cream sauce came as rather unconventional for a Chinese feast, the dish somehow has an appealing touch.

Pieces flew off the plate quickly.

Other highlights include Stir-fried King Topshell with Chinese Greens, Tiger Prawn Toast with Tomato Salsa, as well as Fragrant Fried Rice with Crabmeat, Egg White & Crunchy Root Vegetable in Vermicelli Basket.

The topshell was a tad too chewy and salty for my liking. Contrastingly, the deep-fried prawn toast was ideally-executed on all fronts with its springy, succulent meat and burst of well-seasoned flavors.

While fried rice might be considered a staple dish, it was nevertheless worthy of calories and tummy space simply because it was delicious!

Mango Peach Jelly concludes the CNY feast on a refreshing note.
