The Coconut Club @ Ann Siang Hill ~ Atas $12.80 Nasi Lemak That's Totally Worth The Money & Calories!

My clubbing days are long gone, but The Coconut Club makes me wanna go clubbing again nowadays! Over their superb nasi lemak of course! Lol!

It is already no secret that the quaint little eatery at Ann Siang Hill serves up an "atas" or upmarket version of our well-loved local coconut rice dish. Some might feel that each plate at $12.80 (nett price) cost more than what we will usually pay at a hawker centre, but hey, it's still cheaper than most restaurants and hotel versions lah. I find The Coconut Club's pricing justifiable as specially-sourced coconut and quality ingredients are used.

Most importantly, our plates of nasi lemak were delicious! Totally worth the money and calories!

Even our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong hosted Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte here during the state visit last December!

A standard serving of Nasi Lemak ($12.80 nett) comes with Coconut Rice, Chicken Leg, Fried Egg, Ikan Bilis, Peanuts, Cucumber and Sambal. Gluten-free version is available upon request, and there is no pork nor lard on the menu.

The Coconut club certainly got their Coconut Rice nailed down. It was cooked to an ideal fluffy texture with a coconut fragrance that enveloped each mouthful with such loveliness. Only MAWA coconuts (a Malaysian West African hybrid) are used which is said to have a higher fat content, thus the yielded coconut milk is more rich and creamy.

We all agreed that the Fried Chicken was awesome! A whole fresh kampung chicken leg was used. Its skin was light and crunchy, and meat tender and succulent, but what really sealed the deal was the blend of herbs and spices which gave it a whole level of Asian aromatics that triumphs in every bite.

The Fried Egg was exactly how I like it: With a light crisp around the edges and runny yolk.

What took me by surprise was the deceptively nondescript Ikan Bilis. The fried anchovies had a thin, shattering crisp and tasted utterly fresh with no rancid oil smell. It was definitely not those run-of-mill, stale versions which we have to endure in many places.

If there is one component which I'm not impressed about, it had to be the sambal. We thought it could be spicier with more flavor and oomph.

Though the nasi lemak portion is already substantial for one individual diner, we couldn't resisting ordering some side dishes to share. Options include Fried Fish (market price) and Otak-Otak ($8.50).

Their thick and soft otak with chunks of fish meat was one of the tastiest that I had. This is a must-order!

We also tried the special items of the day, which were Lady's Finger ($4.20) and Sambal Lala ($10.80) during our visit. Both were well-executed but the sambal lala stood out more for its plump, bouncy flesh. So yummy!

Kudos to the founders of The Coconut Club who decided to translate their passion for nasi lemak into plates of deliciousness which everyone can have a share of. Their story of attending the 2014 nasi lemak conference in KL, and spending two years after to source for suitable coconut and perfect their recipe before establishing the The Coconut Club is very inspiring.

I heard very good things about their rendition of Cendol ($3.80) as well, but alas my tummy was low on space that day. Regret.

There is only one way to get over this regret. I must go clubbing at The Coconut Club again!
